Residents of Oakdale have successfully transformed the appearance and safety of their neighbourhood’s main entrance through a collaborative clean-up operation at the N1 off-ramp on Durban Road in Bellville.
Oakdale Watch spearheaded the initiative in partnership with the City of Cape Town and ward councillor Annelize van Zyl, focusing on improving cleanliness, visibility and safety at the key access point to the community.
The operation saw the thorough clearing of the green strip adjacent to the N1, resulting in what Yollanda Fritz, vice-chair of Oakdale Watch, described as a “noticeable transformation that enhances both community pride and crime prevention efforts.”
What distinguished this clean-up effort was the hands-on participation of Van Zyl, who worked directly alongside Oakdale Watch members and residents rather than simply overseeing the project.

“This is true leadership in action,” Fritz stated in recognition of the councillor’s involvement. “Oakdale Watch salutes you.”
The initiative also drew praise for resident participation, with Oakdale Watch noting: “Your willingness to step forward and serve our community shows that Oakdale is a neighbourhood that cares.”
Several security companies provided visibility and protection during the operation, including Basset, CDF and ADT. The City of Cape Town also assisted with clearing and cleaning efforts on the N1.
“Your presence ensured that volunteers could work safely and effectively,” Fritz mentioned.
Call for continued involvement
Following the successful clean-up, Oakdale Watch has extended an invitation for residents to join their Neighbourhood Watch programme, emphasising that safety and cleanliness are shared community responsibilities.
“Safety and cleanliness are shared responsibilities,” Fritz said, “and meaningful change happens when a community stands united.”
