Comic Con Cape Town has announced the details of its cosplay competitions.

The city’s version of the international convention will take place from 30 April to 3 May at the Cape Town International Convention Centre, where cosplayers from across the country will showcase their handmade creations.

What is cosplay?

For newcomers to the art form, cosplay combines costume design with performance. Participants create detailed replicas of outfits worn by fictional characters from films, video games, books and anime, then bring these characters to life through acting and attitude.

International guests join the celebration

Two renowned cosplay artists will attend the event. Yaya Han has been cosplaying since 1999, creating more than 400 detailed costumes and judging competitions worldwide. She now focuses on making cosplay materials more accessible and supporting charitable projects.

Competition highlights

The event features two types of competitions. Daily casual competitions, held twice each day on the main stage, welcome all skill levels and both handmade and shop-bought costumes. Participants can register on the day at Cosplay Central.

The main Comic Con Cape Town Cosplay Competition accepts only completely handmade costumes created by the wearer. This year, 39 contestants will compete, with judges evaluating both costume construction and performance skills. The finals take place at 4pm on the main stage.
