The City of Cape Town said on Tuesday (4 August) that its libraries have received a total of 37 422 overdue items back during its Fine Free Weeks.

According to the City, the overdue items were valued at R4 767 836,51.

“The number proves just how popular our Fine Free Weeks are. It is an opportunity for patrons to return books and other items without paying a fine for late returns.

“Returning books allows others to also experience reading their favourite book. Our libraries have so much to offer, and I would like to invite residents to visit their local library to enjoy a safe reading space and so much more,” said Francine Higham, Mayco member for community services and health.

Over the course of a year, the City’s Libraries and Information Services held four successful Fine Free Weeks – the last being held during the recent school holiday break, which ran from 29 June to 4 July. This week also saw the return of 10 300 items valued at R1 393 920, the City said.

Library patrons also returned 12 442 items during the National Fine Free Week in March earlier this year, the City said.

They said The Diary of a Wimpy Kid remains one of the most returned book series, along with study guides for high school subjects.
