Residents in Bothasig and Edgemead can look forward to making use of new additions to their local parks this festive and summer season.

A new basket ball court has been added to De Grendel Park in Bothasig and a similar project is currently underway at Vondel Park in Edgemead where a netball and basket ball court are being installed.

Miquette Temlett, Ward 5 Councillor, says she is delighted to announce these new developments of multi-purpose sports courts at the two parks, which she believes will enhance recreational options for residents.

These facilities, funded through the ward allocation budget, are a testament to the City of Cape Town’s commitment to providing diverse and accessible recreational spaces, Temlett says.

“The multi-purpose court at De Grendel Park was completed at the beginning of December after the successful installation of two basketball hoops. The Vondel Park multi-purpose court currently comprises of two netball hoops and this project is scheduled to be completed in January 2024. The final steps to complete the project at Vondel Park includes the installation of basketball poles and hoops suitable for both netball and basketball players and the painting of a shoot-out line specifically designed for basketball purposes, in addition to the existing netball lines,” Temlett explains.

She says it is important to note that these courts are intended for recreational use, rather than professional sports. The courts are open to all park-goers for enjoyment and practise purposes. Temlett says the goal is to foster a sense of community, fun, and entertainment for residents in the surrounding areas.

“As these developments come to fruition, we encourage residents to utilize these facilities responsibly and take pride in the communal spaces that contribute to the vibrancy of our neighbourhoods,” she says.
