The City of Cape Town is inviting filmmakers to apply for support through an additional Film Fund round, with submissions open from 7 September for productions expected to be completed in the 2026/27 financial year.

The additional round follows the successful launch of the third Film Fund and is aimed at filmmakers with projects nearing completion. Applications close on 7 October 2026.

Support

The fund provides financial support or municipal services support for film projects produced in Cape Town. It aims to drive local economic development, create jobs across the film and media value chain and strengthen emerging talent through upskilling and training initiatives.

“Projects backed through earlier funding rounds are also performing strongly on the festival circuit, highlighting the quality of talent emerging from Cape Town. We look forward to supporting a new selection of projects that will continue to showcase our city’s creative excellence and strengthen its position as a premier filmmaking hub,” said Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith.

Two projects supported by the fund were screened at this year’s Silwerskerm Festival.

Selection criteria

The City is seeking projects that:

• stimulate local economic growth and create jobs within Cape Town;
• highlight and promote the unique aspects of the city;
• support and upskill emerging talent in the film and media sector;
• drive sustainability, diversity and inclusion within the local film and media landscape;
• authentically portray Cape Town’s rich history and cultural heritage;
• can attract direct investment into the city.

Eligible projects include production and post-production funding for short films, feature films, animation, interactive gaming and reality TV series. Projects must be completed within the City’s financial year, from 1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027.

Ineligible projects include adult content, training or corporate videos, current affairs or news shows and the purchasing of equipment or assets.

The Film Support Application form, Project Plan form and documents checklist are available to download from the Film Cape Town and City of Cape Town websites.

Completed applications with supporting documentation must be e-mailed to Film.Fund@capetown.gov.za. No hand-delivered applications will be accepted.
