The primary mission of the Fire and Rescue Service is to safeguard life and property from fires and other emergencies. The comprehensive activities documented in the report underscore the service’s commitment to ensuring the safety of both residents and visitors to the city.

A concerning rise in accidents

Among the various statistics presented, one of the most alarming is the high number of motor vehicle and pedestrian accidents. Ward 28, which encompasses Epping Forest, Epping Industria 2, Goodrail and Ruyterwacht, recorded the highest number of incidents in Subcouncil 4. In this ward there were 25 motor vehicle accidents (MVAs) and 14 pedestrian vehicle accidents (PVAs) reported.

“This is bad”.

In comparison, Ward 25 reported significantly fewer accidents, with only five MVAs and one PVA. Meanwhile, Ward 27, which covers the greater Goodwood area, had 11 MVAs and 6 PVAs. Ward 26 saw 24 motor vehicle accidents and 13 pedestrian vehicle accidents, making it the second-highest after Ward 28.

Understanding the causes

Maxine Bezuidenhout, spokesperson for the City’s Traffic Service, highlighted several potential causes for these accidents. These include driver behaviour, failure to adhere to road rules, driving under the influence of alcohol, speeding, distractions, reckless and negligent driving, adverse weather conditions and sudden mechanical breakdowns.
