Traffic related incidents are one of the biggest complaints in Ward 27.

The City’s Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith pointed this out during last month’s safety discussion of Goodwood.

Thereafter the importance of the Goodwood Transport Management centre was highlighted.

“The Goodwood Transport Management Centre’s (TMC) CCTV cameras are used during events in the city and for area management. For example, defective streetlights and traffic lights are reported, and localized flooding in areas, amongst others,” Ruth Solomons, spokesperson for the metro police department said.

These cameras allow the City’s traffic service to send regular email updates to all radio stations.

Currently there are 21 cameras in the two wards of Goodwood, Ward 26 and Ward 27, that give an overview of the traffic in and around Goodwood, but are not limited to the Goodwood area.

“The metro police CCTV camera system covers many suburbs across the metropole, not just Goodwood,” Solomons said.

According to Solomons the camera operators are trained to detect and prevent (or mitigate the impact of) crime incidents, fires, by-law transgressions, traffic management and related matters and medical incidents.

Smith stated all the cameras that were tested are operational and contribute to the reduction in crimes.

Being the eyes of the metropole and the vital role that it plays, loadshedding does not affect the Goodwood Traffic Management Centre.

“These cameras already detected 22 incidents and these affected arrests relating to the detections,” Smith said.

In addition, 37 neighbourhood watch members were recruited to monitor the CCTV.
