  • A sewer blockage caused disruptions at the United Reformed Church in Silversands, canceling several activities.
  • After weeks of dealing with the stench, the City of Cape Town resolved the issue.
  • Normal services and activities have now resumed at the church.

After weeks of having to deal with a stench in the church yard the congregation of the United Reformed Church in Silversands can attend services in peace.

The church had to cancel many of its programmes in recent weeks due to the stench. The youth, the senior’s club and various meetings were cancelled. The church council went from pillar to post to get help and eventually help arrived last week. The City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, says after a thorough investigation by the City’s water and sanitation maintenance team, a manhole on the affected sewer line was discovered to have been covered by soil and grass, making it look like a sinkhole.

“This obstruction prevented the team from accessing the manhole sooner, contributing to the delay in resolving the sewer blockage. Once the manhole was located, the blockage was cleared, and normal services have since resumed,” says Badroodien. He pleaded with the community to respect the sewerage system. “We kindly request that residents and businesses assist by keeping manholes accessible, as delays in locating and accessing them can prevent our teams from resolving issues quickly,” says Badroodien.
