Kuils River police have noticed an increase in carjackings in September. Local police spokesperson WO Liesel Beukes said it is specifically drivers of e-hailing services such as Uber, Bolt and inDrive that are targeted.
“We urge these drivers to be vigilant when transporting passengers,” Beukes said. “Please report any suspicious-looking activities immediately to the police.”
The police also noticed an increase in street robberies in the Kuils River policing precinct in September.
“Street robberies occur mostly in the early morning and afternoon when people are on their way to or from work,” said Beukes.
“We want to urge our community members to walk in groups and to be vigilant at all times.
“Do not walk while busy on your cellphone. Please report any suspicious-looking activities to the police immediately.”
Point out
Station commander of Kuils River police Col JT Naidoo explained when a robbery or carjacking is reported at the police station the following will happen before a case docket is opened: “The police officer will first request from the complainant where the offence occurred.
“The officer will take the complainant to point out the scene of the robbery or carjacking.
“Once the exact crime scene is pointed out by the complainant to the police officer a case docket will be opened for investigation.”
Naidoo said the police also want to urge people to refrain from leaving valuable items such as cellphones, laptops and tablets in their vehicle in full view of opportunistic criminals.
“Take reasonable steps to limit the risk of becoming a victim of crime. It has been noticed that expensive cellphones up to the value of R25 000 are robbed from complainants.”
