The City of Cape Town announced last week that it will temporarily close some of its swimming pools as from today (Monday 23 February) for planned infrastructure repairs, maintenance, and upgrades.
The Goodwood Swimming Pool in Milton Road, Goodwood is one of the swimming pools which will temporarily close its doors for work to be done, which the municipality says is aimed at ensuring safe, reliable, and well-maintained facilities for local communities.
In a statement issued on Friday last week the City says its Recreation and Parks Department has adopted strategies to ensure the sustainability of its 37 swimming pools, and is now midway through its five-year swimming pool programme which has several phases.
Some have been completed and this includes infrastructure repairs, maintenance and improvements which will continue in preparation for the upcoming 2026/’27 financial year swimming pool season, the City says.
Two swimming pools have already closed, Delf and Bellville South.
In addition, as part of the next phase, the Goodwood Swimming Pool, along with the Manenberg, Lentegeur and Langa Swimming Pools, will close for the remainder of the current swimming pool season.
Over the past three financial years, the City invested approximately R113,5 million in swimming pool upgrades and maintenance across the metropole.
“Our swimming pools are vital, multi-functional community hubs that promote health, safety, and a sense of community. These are facilities that are well-used and are more than just a place to cool off, but we need to ensure they remain in good condition and maintained.
“We appreciate resident’s patience as we continue to work towards providing world class facilities for all,” says Francine Higham, Mayco member for Community Services and Health.
The rest of the City’s swimming pools will remain operational until 22 March – from Wednesdays to Sundays between 10:00 and 18:00. From 23 March until 6 April, these swimming pools will operate daily again for the school holidays, and close for the season on Tuesday 7 April, the City says.
