The South African Chin Woo Kung Fu team, led by Shifu Muhammad Junaid (MJ Li) Chafeker, managed to rake in a total of 13 medals at this year’s 21st Hong Kong International Wushu Championship. The event was held in the Far East from Saturday 21 March to Monday 23 March.

The team, #BlitzFus, won a total of nine gold medals, and four silver medals. “They came, they saw, they conquered,” the team management said in a statement on Wednesday.

MJ Li, a Legends of Kung Fu World Champion and World Action Martial Arts Hall of Fame inductee, said the team did South Africa proud, finishing in the Top 5 out of 22 countries that had competed in the event. MJ himself managed to win three gold medals competing in the Professional Adult Division. He also claimed the highest scores by any foreign athlete at the championship.

As for the rest of the team members, Luqmaan Slarmie and Saifullah Chafeker: Saifullah also won three gold medals and two silver medals, while Luqmaan won three gold and two silver medals as well. MJ said both athletes did exceptionally well under immense pressure.

MJ, their coach, was also officially appointed as International Wushu Kung Fu ambassador in Hong Kong for Global Promotion of Kung Fu. Team manager, Salma Natalie Dora, won the award for Best Foreign Team Manager.

“The team did their final preparation for the championship while observing fast in the holy month of Ramadan, and then travelled under strenuous circumstances as a result of the turmoil in the Middle East, so massive salute to the South African team,” a statement issued on behalf of the team reads.

The event was held at the Ma On Shan Sports Centre in Hong Kong.

MJ is set to host the 4th Africa International Youth Kung Fu Championship in Cape Town on Saturday 25 April and Sunday 26 April at the Fairbairn College multipurpose hall in Goodwood. The event will feature seven African teams with the South African Chin Woo Kung Fu team being the defending champions.
