“Conducting oversight is an important part of the committee’s work and one which we take seriously, as it is holding the City to account,” said Anda Ntsodo, councillor and chair of the human settlements portfolio committee.

New building technologies

“Visiting Greenville is always an interesting experience as it makes use of new building technologies which allow for faster and more efficient construction,” he said.

“The City’s Dido Valley project is significant as it will assist residents from the Redhill informal settlements and the Luyolo restitution community. The project in Gugulethu is especially meaningful as previous contracts were terminated due to poor performance. The City took over the project and it has since progressed well.

“The committee will continue to monitor these projects to ensure they are progressing well and homes are handed over to beneficiaries as soon as possible,” Ntsodo said.

Hard work

“Thank you to all stakeholders, including our communities, City teams and project steering committees for their hard work,” he said.

“We are so pleased to see the projects progressing well. We thank all stakeholders for a productive oversight visit and as a committee, we remain committed to ensuring the City performs, is held to account and protects the delivery to Cape Town’s most vulnerable residents,” Ntsodo said.

Housing needs register

He reminded residents that beneficiaries of City housing projects are selected in accordance with the City’s housing allocation policy and housing needs register to ensure housing opportunities are made available in a fair and transparent manner.

“This prevents queue jumping and is fair to those who qualify for housing as per the South African legislation. The City’s political office bearers do not have access to, nor do they have influence over the register and its qualifying beneficiaries,” he said.
