The blocks on compressed cannabis found in a hidden compartment in the trailer.

In a major drug bust on the N1 in Kraaifontein police, on Friday, intercepted a vehicle transporting 215 kg of compressed cannabis worth R1,7 million heading towards Cape Town.

Officers attached to the Hawks’ South African Narcotics Enforcement Bureau (Saneb) received a tip-off about the Toyota Hilux bakkie transporting the cannabis from Gauteng.

“The vehicle was stopped and searched by police who discovered 215, 1 kg blocks wrapped in sellotape in a hidden compartment in the vehicle’s trailer,” said Hawks spokesperson Zinzi Hani.

The driver and passenger, aged 27 and 28 respectively, were arrested and expected to appear in the Kuils River Magistrates’ Court today.

The Western Cape Community Police Board (WCCPB) over the weekend commended the police for their swift and decisive action in intercepting illegal substances destined for local communities.

“We recognise the importance of these actions in disrupting the flow of illegal substances into our neighbourhoods,” said Justin Kumlehn in a statement from the WCCPB.

“Drug-related crimes not only damage the health and safety of our communities, but also erode the social fabric that holds us together.”He called on residents to continue to support and work alongside the police, by providing them with information that can assist in preventing criminal activities such as drug trafficking.
