A woman in Mitchells Plain has been arrested for attempting to bribe a police officer into smuggling drugs into Pollmoor Prison.

The woman, from Westridge, was implicated in a bribe that originally came from the prison and was taken into custody on Wednesday 15 July.

Call from inside the cell

The situation started when a police officer at the Mitchells Plain Crime Prevention Unit got a call from a gang leader serving a sentence at Pollsmoor.

“He requested that he collect drugs from his wife for an inmate who was appearing in the Mitchells Plain Regional Court,” said provincial police spokesperson Const Ndakhe Gwala.

He said the gang leader offered the officer cash for the task.

The officer duly went to an address in Otland Street, Westridge, where the gang leader’s wife handed him a parcel of dagga, two grams of tik, two knives, four cigarette lighters, a pack of cigarettes and cash.

The 32-year-old woman was then arrested for possession of drugs and bribery, Gwala said.

She will appear in the Mitchells Plain Magistrates’ Court once charged.

Commendation

Police have commended the officer for his integrity.
