Residents in Bothasig have been warned to be vigilant as a rise in remote signal jamming has been confirmed by the local Community Policing Forum (CPF).
Mario Borchards, CPF chair, says Bothasig has experienced remote jamming incidents at two local retail complexes last month.
“Criminals use a signal jammer to block communication between your remote and your vehicle, preventing it from locking, while making you believe it has. These incidents occurred during very busy times when shoppers were rushing into the stores or just before closing time,” he says.
At the recent CPF executive meeting, the police reported a significant increase in “out of vehicle” robberies where criminals gained access without any signs of forced entry, a trend consistent with remote jamming activity, he says.
Additionally, at the recent Goodwood police Imbizo, it was also highlighted that remote jamming remains a growing problem in the Goodwood area.
“It seems like it is moving across to the Bothasig policing precinct,” says Borchards
Safety tips
Motorists are urged to take the following precautions:
. Double-check locks. Always physically test your door handle to ensure the vehicle is locked before walking away;
. Hide valuables. Keep all belongings out of sight to avoid attracting thieves, who often target the contents of the vehicle rather than the car itself;
. Stay alert. Be aware of your surroundings and avoid distractions like checking your phone while locking your car;
. Park in well-lit, visible areas. Criminals are less likely to target vehicles in open, monitored spaces, for example close to a security booth;
. Report suspicious activity immediately.
.If you notice someone lingering in the parking area or behaving oddly, alert centre security or the police.
