The community of Bonteheuwel reacted with shock after the death of an elderly woman who was knocked over by a car.
Local ward councillor Angus McKenzie says Valma Matthews was knocked over just after noon on Thursday in Bonteheuwel Avenue.
Tragically passed away
“I arrived on the scene shortly afterwards where the City’s Fire and Rescue personnel were already attending to her. I immediately engaged ambulance services to ensure that medical assistance reached the scene as quickly as possible. Matthews was transported to Somerset Hospital, but tragically, just after 18:00 I received the heartbreaking news that she had passed away due to the extent of the injuries she sustained,” says McKenzie.
According to him he has since engaged with both the Matthews family as well as the driver of the vehicle. “I can confirm that both families are deeply traumatised and devastated by what has happened. The driver remained on the scene throughout and has been fully supportive during the entire process.
Freak accident
“This was a terrible freak accident, with no intention to harm. This tragedy has sent shockwaves through our Bonteheuwel community. During this incredibly painful time, I ask that we keep both families in our prayers and thoughts. Let us also respect their need for privacy as they come to terms with this heartbreaking loss.
“Instead of speculation, rumours or fake news, let our community respond with what truly matters – love, compassion and support for everyone affected. My deepest condolences go out to the Matthews family. May she rest in peace.”
