The community of Bonteheuwel and surroundings are celebrating a big victory after an alleged major gangster was arrested over the weekend.
The area has for many years been the breeding ground of gangsters who fight each other for turf in order to control the drug trade.
During the past couple of months gang violence reached a peak when many gangsters from rival gangs were shot and killed. Most of them were killed in retaliatory attacks.
According to local ward councillor, Angus McKenzie, the gang warfare lead to intensified patrolling and community participation, which led to two weeks of calm in the area. “The community’s participation in providing valuable tip-off information was further rewarded when a known American gangster was arrested and found in possession of an unlawful firearm and ammunition. This arrest, driven by tip-off information, was conducted by visible patrolling law enforcement officers. This is a huge win today, which will pour cold water on rival gangs’ plans to win back territory,” says McKenzie.
