Hours after family members sent out panicked requests for information regarding their missing father, police officers found his body next to a railway line in Bellrail, Bellville.

The circumstances surrounding the death of Bennie MacKay (63) are still unclear and police officers are appealing for any information that could help solve his murder, which happened over a month ago.

MacKay is originally from Blackheath and his body was found on 7 September around 17:10, Bellville Police Station spokesperson Capt Aubrey Morwenyane has confirmed.

Earlier that day, MacKay’s son, Edward, put out a call on Facebook asking anyone with information regarding Bennie’s whereabouts to let the family know where he is. “He left home this morning and (has) not returned as yet … had on a black tracksuit pants, black takkies and a brown striped top.”

Apparently, MacKay was attacked while walking close to the railway line. He was stabbed multiple times, but nothing was stolen.

Morwenyane says a case of murder is being investigated by the police and request anyone who may have relevant information to contact the investigating officer on 082 259 2632.

Alternatively, call crime stop on 08600 10111.

The area surrounding the railway line has been a hot spot for crime for many years.

TygerBurger has previously written about neighbourhood watches appealing for help from relevant authorities in trimming the bushes, where criminals are known to hide and rob pedestrians.

The Bellville South Residents Association issued a warning after news of MacKay’s death came to light last week.

“The railway and bridge area between Bellville South and Bellrail is an extremely dangerous area. Residents are advised to walk in groups at all times.”

They vowed to follow up with stakeholders regarding a strategy for the area.

“We wish to convey our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased.”
