  • Sabrina Martin was on patrol with three other forum members and standing in front of a local shop when a Nissan NP200 came speeding down the road and hit all four of them.
  • Medical personnel responding to the scene declared Martin dead on the scene.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday (8 November) for a member of the Bishop Lavis Community Policing Forum (CPF) who was killed by an alleged drunk driver on Saturday night.

Sabrina Martin was on patrol with three other forum members and standing in front of a local shop when a Nissan NP200 came speeding down the road and hit all four of them.

According to JP Smith, Mayco Member for safety and security, medical personnel responding to the scene declared Martin dead on the scene. “A white bakkie with two occupants, including the driver who is alleged to have been under the influence of alcohol drove into the store,” he related.

“Such reckless and negligent driving continues week after week, despite our desperate pleas. Last week alone traffic officers arrested 81 motorists for driving while under the influence.

“Our thoughts go to the families of these patrollers at this difficult time. The directorate will do everything possible to support the police to ensure those guilty of this atrocity face the full extent of the law.”

At the chaotic scene where the driver plunged into community policing forum patrollers.

Sgt Samantha Adonis, police spokesperson, said the suspect was under police protection in hospital. “He will be charged with drunken driving and culpable homicide. A memorial service will be held at 18:30 at the Ivory Store in Ivory Street.”

Angus McKenzie, local Ward councillor, said Martin had served her community with honour. “Our thoughts and prayers go to her family, friends and the rest of the [community forum] team at this very difficult time. She served her community with absolute honour and dedication. Her loss will be deeply felt by all who interacted with this amazing community worker. This is indeed a very sad time for all of us.”
