The Big Bay Surf and Lifesaving Club, a non-governmental organisation (NGO) based in Bloubergstrand, has been awarded Club of the Year for the lifeguard duties they conduct on beaches in Bloubergstrand, according to Mandi Basson, spokesperson for the club.

“The club won out of 18 other lifesaving clubs,” says Basson, adding that this is the second year in a row the club won this award.

Regular beach patrols on “duty days”, submitting returns to Lifesaving Western Province, qualifying a hundred or more lifeguards, as well as assisting disadvantaged groups in the community the lifesaving club operates in all counted towards the club’s victory.

“The club gets bonus points for qualifying close to altogether 100 lifeguards, as well as for community work, where we have supplied equipment to disadvantaged clubs in the district,” Basson explained.
