Residents of Bellville South queue to get water from a water truck outside the Proteaville Recreation Centre last week.

It was a frustrating few days for many Bellville residents last week after faulty pipes caused taps to dry up for several days.

Last Tuesday evening, the City of Cape Town had to shut off the water supply to numerous parts of the suburb to repair the broken water main in Kasselsvlei.

“This requires that a 450 mm and an 800 mm diameter pipeline be shut off to enable the repairs done safely,” the City said in alerts sent to residents via social media and their ward councillors.

This affected the Bellville CBD, Shirley Park, Labiance, Marina Park, Belrail, Sanlamhof, Bellville South, Greenlands, Glenhaven, UWC, CPUT, Sacks Circle, Steel Park and Transnet.

The City sent water trucks to service the affected areas, but by early Thursday morning many residents were desperately sending messages on social media asking when the water would be restored.

It seems the draining of water took the longest of all.

At 07:00 the City said it had drained the excavation site and could assess what repairs needed to be done. This was done throughout the day and water was restored by 18:00.
