- Bellville Police Station reports a significant rise in vehicle break-ins caused by remote jamming devices.
- Criminals use these devices to prevent cars from locking, even though the alarm may indicate otherwise.
- Police advise the public to check car locks manually and follow other safety precautions to avoid becoming victims.
Bellville Police Station is concerned about the alarming increase regarding vehicles being broken into by means of remote jamming.
Police spokesperson Lt Col Fienie Nimb says the modus operandi is to use a signal jamming device which, when activated, prevents the car from locking.
“Even though the alarm will indicate that the vehicle is locked, this is not the case. Always physically check that your car is indeed locked,” warns Nimb.
“These criminals are targeting especially parking areas and their operating times are either early in the morning or late afternoon.”
She says two suspect groupings have been identified regarding this crime to be on the lookout for:
- One male operates signal jamming from a white Suzuki.
- Also a white Volkswagen Polo with several occupants inside.
- Never leave any visible items in your vehicle. Criminals sees this as an opportunity to break into your car.
- Before you leave your premises, place your valuables in your boot and do not wait until you arrive at your destination to do so. “This must be done before arriving at your destination, as the criminals are already in the parking area waiting for an unsuspecting victim.”
- Be vigilant when you park your vehicle and be on the lookout for any suspect vehicles with occupants. They also work in groups.
- Invest in buying an anti-theft/jamming car key holder.
