Brave officers from the Belhar police station last week went on foot to help a pregnant woman in labour.

According to WO Liesel Beukes, police spokesperson, on 3 July at approximately 07:50 a member of the public came anxiously to the police station for assistance as his wife was in the process of giving birth at their home in Perth Close, Belhar.

“Const Khuselwa Nikelo called the ambulance for assistance but then she mobilised all female staff at the police station, which included herself, Const Nomzamo Nobethe-Jange, CAC Lisa van der Walt, CAC Celeste Primo, cleaner Emerla Hendriks, intern Davine Fortuin, intern Anthea Christians and the Acting Station Commander Lt Col Nokwanda Harmans to go on foot to the residence as the ambulance was on the way,” says Beukes.

On arrival at the home the wife was laying on her back on the couch crying, and was about to give birth. “Nikelo, Van der Walt and Fortuin immediately put on hand gloves and assisted the lady. They started the process of labour from scratch until the baby boy was born at 08:55. The staff named him Baby Boy Belhar (BBB). The fire department arrived at 09:10 and the baby was handed over to them. On arrival back at the police station, Van der Walt approached Harmans and said she would like to donate something towards the baby. She donated R500 towards clothing for BBB. On Thursday 4 July the staff at the Belhar police returned to the home and handed over the clothing that Van De Walt bought for the baby,” says Beukes.

Harmans commended the officers for their dedication, commitment and going above and beyond the call of duty.
