Animal Welfare Society pleads for help to catch Mitchells Plain cat killer

WARNING | This story contains a graphic image that might upset sensitive readers

A sordid story of brutally killed cats in Mitchells Plain seems to have leapt straight out of a horror movie plot.

According to a Facebook post by the Animal Welfare Society (AWS), the cats were not only killed in an “unimaginably violent” way, but their corpses were then staged in a play park in Harmony Village.

Brutally killed

According to the post, the bodies of several cats that had been brutally killed were found last week. The post appealed to the public for help to catch the killer.

Dog bite wounds

The cats were found with multiple deep puncture wounds consistent with dog bites, the post said, suggesting they endured a violent dog attack before they died.

AWS suspects that the cats were either deliberately set upon by dogs or that they had been used as bait for dog fights.

Dumped near play park

In another gruesome twist, the corpses were deliberately arranged and dumped near a children’s play park in the vicinity of Pinecliff and Fawn roads, apparently to shock and intimidate the community, the AWS said.

The post compared the cat killings to another in Manenberg in 2021, saying this was not a random act but a “calculated and exceptionally cruel” one.

Post-mortem examinations

AWS inspectors recovered several of the bodies and forensic post-mortem examinations are under way to establish the cause of death and gather clues about who was responsible.

Anyone who is missing a cat, has seen anything suspicious or has information that could help solve the case is asked to contact Inspector Sivuyile Kilwa or Inspector Crystal Fester on 021 692 2626 or 082 601 1761.
