A total of 90 Air Force personnel were honoured for long-service duty during a special medal parade held at the Ysterplaat Air Force Base last week.

The event was attended by hundreds of Air Force staff along with their families and friends.

The combined medal parade between the Air Force bases Ysterplaat, Langebaanweg and Overberg started at 10:00 on a windy Friday 12 October, and was officiated by Brigadier-General Mac Matanda, officer commanding Air Force Base Langebaanweg.

The programme started off with the code of conduct being read out, before a scripture reading and prayer.

This was followed by a performance by the Air Force’s brass band and a march by the parade in front of the aeroplane hangars.

Before the medal handover, members of the famous Silver Falcons also performed a sequenced flyover to start off the event.

“What makes today’s event even more special and remarkable is that Western Cape Air Force bases are united, to once again demonstrate that we are indeed an Air Force that inspires confidence.

“A medal parade is always a special occasion where we acknowledge and pay tribute to the sacrifices and commitment made by our colleagues, and also to pay tribute to families and spouses who rendered their endless and undying support,” Matanda said in his speech.

Matanda said the medals awarded are a reflection of how much the country appreciates the members.

“As disciplined members of the South African Air Force (SAAF), we should always strive to do the right thing even when no-one is looking. Discipline is and will always be the cornerstone of every soldier,” Matanda said.

He added that they are aware that these exceptional achievements did not come without sustained efforts and much sacrifice on the part of both members and their families and loved ones.

“To the families and loved ones of the recipients, your support in this regard is highly appreciated and we trust that the SAAF can depend on your continued and relentless support to your loved ones henceforth.”
