While Capetonians escaped the vicious temperatures towards the end of 2023 and the festive season, the City of Cape Town denied the inhabitants of the greater Goodwood and surrounds access to the Goodwood swimming pool.

Access was only graciously granted from 8 January 2024, by which time most grown-ups were back at work and youngsters had one entire week before the school reopened.

Damning to say the least!

I presume it was the usual operational maintenance work which could have been facilitated during the normal closed period, but even then, a sheet of fibreglass roof (damaged early in 2023) has been ripped the entire length and it is more than just an eyesore.

I presume the hideous cost of one sheet would have viciously impacted on the City’s budget. Not to mention the numerous city vehicles and personnel who regularly were on site. And of course, the maintenance of water in the pool.

As would have been a simple notice at the entrance notifying visitors that the pool was closed. And presumably, the councillor is ignorant of the closure/problems!

However, I note that the Langa pool was also closed (among others) with a long list of problems. Yet within weeks it will be opened.

Yet again, a spokesperson, as in the case with Goodwood in the past, was informed that pools in some cases 5 km away were indeed open.

The Goodwood swimming pool was just opened for three days but was closed again due to “technical problems”.

Oh well, it was just during the hottest days the peninsula experienced in a decade!

It’s a shame, City of Cape Town.
