With November being Diabetes Awareness Month, a 5 km walk, Walking in Memory of Caylee Usher, will take place on Sunday 14 November at Mouille Point, starting at the lighthouse.

Walking in Memory of Caylee Usher aims to pay tribute to those who lost their lives to diabetes, those living with the disease as well as raising awareness of the effects of it on those who live with diabetes.

It is organised by Anthea Usher, a diabetes patient, who lost her daughter Caylee to the desease in 2018.

She says the walk also aims to challenge stereotypes around people who live with the disease. “A lot of people do not know the facts about diabetes and its patients. We tend to think that lifestyle is the only contributing factor to getting diabetes,” Usher says.

The event is purely to pay tribute and raise awareness.

“I stand to gain nothing financially, just the satisfaction of knowing that I have done my bit to raise awareness.”

Those who wish to take part in the walk are invited and there is no fee to pay.

The public can also take part in the walk virtually and their progress on the campaign’s Facebook page.
