It would appear that the lawless taxi drivers causing daily chaos on the corner of Ninth Avenue and Van Riebeeck Road in Kraaifontein have only been policed by traffic services once since the 17th of November last year.

Several complaints over aggressive driving on the side of taxi drivers at this dangerous intersection had been lodged with the City since last year November and two media inquiries lodged by TygerBurger since then.

Last week Richard Coleman, spokesperson for the City’s traffic service, finally responded to TygerBurger stating that “this complaint was attended to on Friday 21 January 2022.”

“The offences which were recorded and notices issued include an unlicensed vehicle and unlicensed drivers among others,” he said.

He continued to say: “It is unfortunate, due to the magnitude of the area and various other complaints of the same nature, that traffic officers cannot be deployed to this location on a daily basis.”

He added that the City will continue with ad-hoc monitoring of this location to address the concerns raised.

Motorists using the road say nothing much has changed on the road.

One motorist even reported escaping a serious accident when she had to swerve out for a taxi who nearly drove straight into her, skipping a red traffic light. Reportedly, taxis drive on the wrong side of the road, skip red traffic lights and push other vehicles off the road.

Several motorists TygerBurger spoke to since last year November said that this lawlessness is causing much friction between taxi drivers and other motorists.

In the meantime chaos continues unabated adding to the daily frustration of motorists in Kraaifontein.
