The Blue Downs Cricket Club had a busy weekend where both the first and second teams were in action.
According to Ryno Mars from the club, the second team played against Strandfontein’s third team. “Strandfontein won the toss and elected to bat first with the openers starting off very well, but lost their first wicket (Ronald Williams) after 6.4 overs for just 29. Razieg Anthony who was bowling very good line and length got the first scalp. The Bluedowns captain,
Bongani Mpumpuse, continued to pile on the pressure after replacing Anthony and bringing on Franklin le Fleur and Ronald Williams who made an instant impact by getting 2 very quick wickets. The change bowler Bradley Arendse, who replaced Williams, kept applying the pressure along with Franklin le Fleur who bowled his 8 overs 5 for 36 runs and Bradley Arendse bowled 6 overs for 3 for 20 runs,” says Mars.
Mars says the fielding was also good on the day and it helped Blue Downs win the game.
When Mars and Mpumpuse went in to bat they started off very slowly in the first 6 overs but increased steadily as the innings went on. They continued to make a partnership of 92 runs just before the loss of Mars for 44 runs. The next batsman, Ridwaan Davids, did not stay long with Mpumpuse and was out quickly and then Le Fleur came in to bat and won the game for us,” says Mars.
In the first team match against Helderberg Cricket Club, Bluedowns won the toss and elected to field first with the Helderberg openers starting off like a house on fire scoring 46 runs in 10 overs. Both opening batters went to score half centuries with Marcello Thomas scoring 75 runs before being caught by Emilio Koopman of the bowling of Timoteus Oktober. Glynn Sylvester went on to score 82 runs before also falling to Oktober.
Helderberg went on to score a massive 248 runs for 8 wickets in their 50 overs.
Bluedowns went in to bat scoring at a rapid rate with 42 runs coming in the first 10 overs before the loss of Koopman for 35 runs of 40 balls. Heinrich Dyssel continued the attack scoring 61 runs from 57 balls.
Some other players made valuable contributions, like Schray Erasmus scoring 28 of 43 and Bevan Paulse scoring 36 runs of 36 balls. Eventually their efforts were not enough, falling 54 runs short of the winning total.
