More than 80 members of the local community policing forum (CPF) and Monte Vista/Plattekloof Glen Neighbourhood Watch planted a tree in memory of Vic Barra who passed away on Friday 4 March following a battle with cancer.
The tree was planted opposite the Engen Garage in Monte Vista Boulevard and the ceremony was attended by his wife, Cheryl, and his family.
Barra had served as chair of the neighbourhood watch for the past seven years, as well as vice-chair of the CPF.
“A giant tree has fallen. Vic (Barra) was an amazing administrator, always placing the community first. In 2020 he won the organisational excellence award from the City of Cape Town, a testimony to what he has done for the community,” says John Ross, chair of the Goodwood CPF.
Ross describes him as a loyal family man and good friend.
Following the ceremony, a “white light” drive-through in Monte Vista ended at the Barra home where flowers and candles were handed to the family.
“We learned with a sad heart of his passing and his dedication to our organisation knew no bounds. I’ll describe him as a strong, dedicated and caring leader and we are at a loss as to how we will go on without him,” says Ross.
He added that the organisations he belonged to send their heartfelt condolences to the Barra family.
“Barra will be greatly missed by us all and left a legacy which is memorable and which we will try to emulate going forward,” Ross says.
Barra also supported the Edgemead Bowling Club and was an ardent fan of Chelsea Football Club in England and a Springbok supporter. He also loved the music of Enrique Iglesias.
The neighbourhood watch will have to follow a process to elect a new chair, as will the CPF to elect a new vice-chair.
