Residents and motorists in Sunningdale are looking for answers from the City of Cape Town after reporting a possible sinkhole last year.
According to a concerned resident, a section of the main road on the corner of the R27 is still cordoned off, but no City workers are visible at the site.
The City started investigating this matter on 20 December last year when reports of a possible sinkhole were first logged.
“Every day I drive past the site and see no workers there. It has been months and traffic is piling up on that section of the road – not to mention the danger for the motorists at that section is known as a hotspot for accidents,” says resident Diane Bekker.
“There was no time frame given as to when this issue will be resolved,” she adds.
According to the City, its water and sanitation directorate is making every effort to investigate the cause of a possible leak to a sewer pipe on the corner of the R27 and Sandown Road in Sunningdale.
Currently there are no overflows.
“It was initially suspected to be a collapsed sewer rising main, however an inspection ruled out that option. Since then there have been non-stop efforts to investigate other possibilities to determine the cause of the leak,” the City says.
The area has been cordoned off since investigation began in December to make it safe for traffic until the cause has been detected and repairs can be completed.
Traffic is currently being diverted in the direction of Cape Town after the robot intersection of the R27/Sandown Road. Construction activity is in the fast lane after the intersection.
“The City regrets the inconvenience caused during this time to residents and businesses. Given the complex nature of this matter, it is taking time to investigate. The team is exhausting all options and will continue to do so until the issue has been fixed,” said Zahid Badroodien, the City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation.
