An updated safety and security plan drawn up by the City of Cape Town will see the rollout of more CCTV cameras in the high crime areas of Kraaifontein.

This plan, that maps priority areas for CCTV installations between 2021 and 2026, was re-tabled and endorsed at a recent meeting of the City’s safety and security portfolio committee.

The exact locations will be determined by crime and incident statistics in consultation with Kraaifontein police, but TygerBurger has it on good authority that the roll-out will be centred around main roads in Bloekombos, Wallacedene, Scottsville and Scottsdene.

“It’s a fact that the City of Cape Town has a well-established CCTV footprint and the intention is to expand on that even more into the future. But I don’t think many of us are aware of the hard work, planning and effort that goes into ensuring that we have a blueprint to work from, and that what we invest today will remain sustainable in future,” said portfolio committee chairperson, Mzwakhe Nqavashe in a statement to the media.

“This plan outlines the rationale behind CCTV investments, explains the many relationships and inputs from key external stakeholders, and also looks to learn from international best practice in terms of ensuring the longevity of our infrastructure and technology.”

The master plan, which was put together by the City’s metro police strategic surveillance unit, also covers the City’ plans to stay abreast of technological developments.

Factors covered include engagement with local business and NPO’s and partnerships with private CCTV owners. Requirements for installation that will be taken into account include stable fibre-optic infrastructure, reliable power sources and the possibility of vandalism in the areas based on reports from City services. Mayco member for safety and security JP Smith said the planning of a timeline is underway.
