Never forget where you come from.
That is the message from Tygerberg Rugby Club’s Old Boys after winning a price worth R25 000 from The Foschini Group.
Wayne Abrahams from the Old Boys says when they heard about the competition they wrote a motivation letter and was fortunate to receive the full amount.
“We realised that there was a need for rugby boots for our junior teams. We approached the South African Rugby Legends and asked if they can assist in getting the most out of the money,” says Abrahams.
Abrahams says besides the senior groups the clubs consist of teams in the under 14, 15, 16 and 18 age groups.
“In every group there is more than 30 children. Most of the boys come out of very difficult circumstances and not everyone had boots. This will boost the boys’ confidence and hopefully inspire them to perform better,” says Abrahams.
He says they use rugby as a tool to prepare the boys for the future.
“One of the main principles of the club is that the children must remain in school. We obviously hope that they rise in rugby, but it is more important for them to focus on education and becoming better human beings,” says Abrahams.
The club has other challenges and Abrahams says they hope that more local businesses can come on board to help the club.
