Brackenfell police are conducting an inquest into the death of a baby whose decapitated head was found next to a footpath close to the railway tracks in Brackenfell on Friday evening.

According to police spokesperson Capt Erica Crous, the grisly discovery was made by a passer-by under the Everite bridge at about 18:00.

Kobus Kotze, head of operations at Titanium Securitas Medical Response who attended to the scene, says the passer-by alerted security and law enforcement officers on Old Paarl Road.

“Our medical team was called to the scene and confirmed that it was the head of a baby, suspected to be a newborn,” says Kotze.

According to Kotze, pieces of a black refuse bag were found in the vicinity of the head.

“I suspect that the head had been dumped in the field and due to the advanced stage of decomposition had been lying there for a while,” he said.

According to Brackenfell police the results of a post-mortem are currently being awaited.
