A 12-year-old boy died when he was electrocuted by an illegal electricity connection in Wallacedene on Monday night.
Emergency services received a call at about 20:15 on the evening in question and immediately made their way to the scene in Gwala Street.
According to paramedic Kobus Kotze from Titanium Emergency Services, the boy’s lifeless body was found where he had already succumbed to his injury.
“He was walking between two shacks that were very close to each other when he touched a live cable,” says Kotze.
An inquest into the death has been opened by Kraaifontein police
“According to bystanders it is alleged that the boy was chased by other boys and then got stuck between two shacks where he got electrocuted,” says provincial police spokesperson Capt FC Van Wyk.
According to Marian Nieuwoudt, Subcouncil 2 chair, illegal electricity connections are prevalent in the area.
“Illegal electricity connections in the area is a daily challenge for Eskom services the area, of which large parts are inaccessible. Most of the shacks that have gone up illegally connect to the existing houses in the area that supplies them with electricity,” she says.
