12 000 people fed in Kraafontein: Monthly soup kitchens tackle hunger crisis

Kraaifontein is one of the area’s most severely affected by food insecurity according to the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale. Hunger as alleviated by several mobile soup kitchens in the area.

In South Africa, one in 10 people go hungry every day, with thousands of men, women and children in Kraaifontein experiencing hunger and malnutrition, according to local NPO Save our Schools.

“Kraaifontein is one of the area’s most severely affected by food insecurity according to the Household Food Insecurity Access Scale (HFIAS), Household Diet Diversity Score (HDDS), as well as Months of Adequate Household Food Provisioning (MAHFP) and the food poverty measures,” the NPO’s spokersperson Amy Burrow said to TygerBurger last week.

Partnered with shoprite

To tackle this extreme hunger crisis the NPO this year partnered with Shoprite’s Act for Change, to host monthly soup kitchens in various locations in the areas most affected.

“As a non-profit we provide food relief to those living in areas with high levels of poverty and crime affecting residents and community members.

“The area is ranked fourth in the country for contact-related crimes and 14th for attempted murder. These kitchens aim to ease the burden of hunger for residents already faced with a magnitude of challenges,” says Burrow.

12 000 people helped

The soup kitchens, which support five different communities, namely Bloekombos, Eikendal, Northpine, Scottsdene, and Watsonia, have helped alleviate hunger for some 12 000 individuals in need this year, according to Burrow.

“It was while focussing on water and sanitation projects in these areas over the past four and a half years that the NPO became aware of the extreme hunger crisis affecting many children and communities in the area. The soup kitchens assist in combating malnourishment, with malnourished children being more vulnerable to waterborne diseases, such as cholera,” adds CEO Shelly Humphreys.
