Two local Bothasig residents are currently embarking on a journey to the South Pole where they will be documenting some of the most remote and breathtaking natural scenery.
Derek Antonio Serra, a photographer and former chair of the Bothasig Residents Association, left for Antarctica last week.
Serra is well known for shooting fashion and travel photographs in locations around the world such as Namibia, Thailand, Patagonia, Maldives and Fiji.
On Thursday last week he and his wife, Akhona, set off on their most adventurous trip yet, to the continent of Antarctica.
The couple will be joining Quark Expeditions on an 11-day voyage aboard their ship, Ocean Adventurer, which will take them across the notorious Drake Passage, through the South Shetland Islands and onto the Antarctic Peninsula, says Serra.
He says Quark Expeditions offers expeditions to both Antarctica and the Arctic regions.
Trip of a lifetime
Akhona works as a global client experience adviser for the company and Derek was lucky enough to be invited along to join her on the trip where he will be helping her to familiarise herself with the Antarctic part of the company’s operations.
Serra will also be shooting stills and record video of the trip and creating social media content about his experiences.
“Getting to Ushuaia in Patagonia which is the departure point for the expedition involved 34 hours of traveling from Cape Town via Istanbul.
“We have equipped ourselves with ski-pants, thermal underwear, UV ski-goggles and a range of warm clothing to combat the temperatures of well below freezing point which we will encounter on daily excursions from the ship in an inflatable zodiac to visit penguin colonies, view Orcas and other whale species, and go ashore at various points,” says Derek.
