Goodwood residents want to know why the vegetation and litter in canals is not being cleaned up, even though the City of Cape Town said clean-ups will commence in April.
This comes due to the winter months ahead and possible flooding rises.
Pictures of litter and vegetation that have grown thick have been posted on Facebook, starting from the Elsieskraal canal from Goodwood through Thornton and Pinelands.
The City said it is aware of the cleaning up that has to be done and plans are in place to address this matter.
The City’s Mayco member for water and sanitation, Zahid Badroodien, said: “The clean-up was scheduled to commence early in April. A delay was caused due to EPWP recruitment challenges which have since been resolved. The contractor should be on-site within the next week.”
According to Badroodien the City’s Catchment Stormwater and River Management (CSRM) Branch, as part of its Winter Readiness Programme has scheduled the cleaning of all canals that are at high risk for flooding.
This programme is ongoing throughout the City during the winter months.
