‘I only had three days to live…’ says Goodwood kidney patient

Shan-Ray Hector (30) from Goodwood.

Being told you only had three days to live was the reality Shan-Ray Hector, a 30-year-old from Goodwood, had to face when she was diagnosed with kidney failure in May 2022.

“My family were told there was nothing more that the hospital could do for me and that we could try a private hospital. Luckily, I was working then and could afford to join a medical aid,” says Hector.

Hector has been to dialysis sessions at the Vincent Pallotti dialysis unit for the past year. She was also sponsored by Gift of the Givers Foundation for a year; however, it ended last month (August).

“For me to continue my dialysis treatment, I need funding. Currently, I only go for two sessions; however, to get stronger and for the fluids and toxins in my body to be reduced, I need at least three sessions of dialysis treatment per week,” says Hector.

Hector explained that all her payments need to be made up front before she can get her treatment per session.

“The fluids are currently in my lungs, my legs start to swell, and I get shortness of breath as the two sessions a week are not enough,” she says.

Hector, however, is hopeful and trusting. She is also actively trying to raise funds and apply for work but finds it difficult to get employed.

She started a Back-a-Buddy account and has to date raised only R2 100.
