The voluntary lifeguards hard at work to secure their spot.

It’s that time of the year when beaches, pools and water parks come alive with the laughter and splashes of eager swimmers seeking relief from the heat – but with the excitement of summer also comes a crucial responsibility: the safety of all those who venture into the water.

Therefore, lifesaving clubs across the city are gearing up for the summer season and are on the lookout for voluntary lifeguards.

Last week, the Milnerton Surf Lifesaving Club qualified another eight voluntary lifeguards, who will be looking after the Milnerton community on the beach this summer.

The City of Cape Town’s recreation and parks department has also opened a second round of applications for lifeguard recruitment to fill vacancies for swimming pool and beach lifeguards needed during the coming holiday season, which closed on 2 October.

The swimming season commences late in September and will end in April 2024, with the high season starting on 1 December 2023.

“Our lifeguards are an important part of ensuring a safe and festive summer season,” says Patricia van der Ross, Mayco member for community services and health. “They are there to look out for bathers and potential water hazards, components of our drowning prevention service. It’s a job that requires commitment and vigilance.”
