Francesca Walker, the Subcouncil 4 chair, made it her mission to feed the needy who have to stand in long queues on any given day to make use of public services.

According to Tracy Phillips, Walker’s executive personal assistant, the outreach at the Department of Labour was due to the long queues and people having to wait for hours without having something to eat.

He says the outreach served a visible need in the community. These are some of the most impoverished areas.

Walker says in her capacity as the ward councillor she prided herself in being actively involved in the community. “Our people struggle sometimes even just to have a plate of food,” she says.

This is the reason she gets involved, even through collaborations, to show her support.

“People sleep over at the labour department waiting to be served. This outreach was in aid of making things easier for them. The elderly, disabled, teenagers and people from all walks of life stand in these queues, in the rain, waiting for assistance.”

During the outreach, containers were purchased by Walker and each person received their fill. Blue Ribbon, community workers, Walker and her ward clerk Devinia Konnie were also involved.

The next outreach will be soon, Walker says, who was also at Home Affairs on Tuesday 3 October, as well as at Sassa in Bellville, and handed in 112 applications for seniors who could not do it themselves.
