With reference to the article in Tyger Burger of 7 February (“Outcry as City axes trees”) and with reference to the trees removal from the green strip on the corner of Uys Krige and Jip de Jager Drive, Loevenstein.
As a resident in the area, with a daily view on the green strip where the trees were removed, it was disturbing to hear the saws and grinders, and to see how the lovely green trees that brought a feeling of cool in the summer months were chopped-off.
All that is left is a “barren sand area” that reminds of a desert, or a quarry. The daily view we as residents now have of the area, where the trees used to be, is that of homeless people who live in tents on this “barren land area”, and where their waste/refuse heap is increasing on this “barren land area”. Needless to say, as I was writing this letter, another tent was raised today in the area, increasing the “squatter area”, with the African sun beating on these tents every day as the shade of the trees were removed, and all is clear for the residents in the area to see.
Why is it then that only the trees on the one side of the green strip were removed, and across the road from Uys Krige drive, the trees are still standing?
