Acting on an anonymous tip-off, Table View police officers intercepted a suspect in the midst of packing illegal substances which were destined for shipment.

The arrest, which took place last week at the complex in Callington Crescent, Parklands, led to the discovery of two firearms as well, Table View police spokesperson Capt Adriana Chandler confirmed.

“With permission of the occupant, the apartment was searched. During the search of one of the bedrooms, officers discovered a firearm hidden inside a box on top of a cupboard. This firearm was reported stolen in the Westville (Durban) area during November 2023. Another firearm was discovered, of which the serial number was filed off. The search also led officers to discover large quantities of cannabis, loose and some compressed,” Chandler says.

The 51-year-old man could not provide the officers with a firearm license, and he was detained at Table View Police Station until his court appearance.

In an unrelated incident, officers were busy with patrols near the informal settlement of Site 5 on Potsdam Road, Table View at 14:30 on the same day, when they stopped and searched a person.

During the search the officers discovered illegal substances hidden inside a bread bag, Chandler says.

“The substances were Mandrax tablets and crystal methamphetamine with an estimated street value of nearly R20 000. A large sum of cash was also found in the 39-year-old male suspect’s possession. He is due to appear in the Cape Town Magistrates’ Court,” says Chandler.

Station Commander Col Tjikamba Markus Mbangu expressed appreciation towards the anonymous caller for providing the information to the police. He has also applauded the officers for their swift response to ensure that illegal firearms and drugs are removed from the streets.
