Kyron van der Bergh is taking part in the SA Championships All Styles in Durban tomorrow.

Twelve-year-old karateka Kyron van der Bergh of Durbanville is climbing the ladder and will represent Western Cape Karate at the Karate South Africa National Championships All Styles in Durban tomorrow (Thursday 4 April) for the second consecutive year.

Kyron, a learner at Durbanville Primary School, was included in the team after he had achieved gold in kata and silver in kumite at the Western Cape Elite All Styles trials, which was held at Tygerberg Sports Centre on 4 February this year.

He is also the national schools champion in both kata and kumite.

This, after he had achieved gold in both categories at the SA Schools Championships All Styles, held at the Sunningdale sports complex in Milnerton Rural on 1 March.

Kyron showed promise in the current karate season when he achieved his WP colours in elite kata and kumite at the WP All Styles trials in September last year for the fourth consecutive year.

He then achieved Mushin Kai national colours in his style, Shito Ryu, in kata and kumite in the open-weight category in November.

Kyron, a member of Mushin Kai Karate in Kraaifontein, started karate when he was 6 years old.

He currently trains under Sensei Raynier Fourie.
