The cause of a devastating fire which left 22 people destitute in the Kapteinsklip informal settlement is still unknown.
In the early hours of Wednesday 10 April a fire broke out in the settlement destroying six structures.
“(The fire started) between 03:30 and 04:00,” says New Beginnings chair, Colin Kayles.
New Beginnings is a non-profit organisation established in the settlement.
“We are waiting on the fire department for the cause of the fire, because occupants were not at home at the time. No one was injured,” he says.
Kayles continues that since the fire, only one family has managed to rebuild their structure, with the other five structures still not rebuilt.
The community is now appealing for assistance and donations of food, materials to rebuild, clothing, shoes, blankets and mattresses.
