Police have opened an inquest docket following the grim discovery of a body in a Woodlands drain.

On Thursday 11 July, municipal workers were attending to a service request for blocked drains on the corners of Mitchells Avenue and Herby Road at 12:36, when they uncovered the body.

Lentegeur police spokesperson, Const Navon van Houten, confirmed to TygerBurger that investigations are ongoing.

“The City of Cape Town was clearing up a blocked drain which the community complained about. They later discovered that a body was blocking the drain. Further information still needs to be detected,” he says.

Body discovered

In a response to TygerBurger’s enquiries, the City of Cape Town says the staff attached to the City’s Water and Sanitation maintenance team responded to the request of unblocking a drain.

“While the team was busy attempting to unblock the line, they discovered a body in it. They immediately contacted police who took over the scene to retrieve the body. The team was offered counselling.”

Ward 75 councillor Joan Woodman who was on the scene says the body was discovered in the sewer drain and not a stormwater drain.

She says the decomposing body was that of a man.

  • Anyone with information is asked to contact the investigating officer, detective Const Joshua Keur on 066 146 1016.
