- The Batavia Street Conservancy in Bothasig has experienced issues with illegal land occupation.
- Subcouncil 3 discussed obtaining an eviction order and proposed improvements such as installing a fence, walkway, and signage to protect the area, which houses endangered plant species.
- The establishment of the Friends of the Batavia Street Conservancy (FBSC) is also underway to support the site’s conservation efforts.
The open piece of land earmarked for the Batavia Street Conservancy in Bothasig have seen a fair share of illegal land invaders occupying the area.
This is according to Roxanne Moses, Subcouncil manager, speaking at the Subcouncil 3 meeting held on Thursday 18 July at the council chambers in Bridle Way, Royal Ascot in Milnerton.
According to Moses the Ward councillor, Miquette Temlett, had requested for an eviction order to be issued to address this issue.
Moses added that there had been an improvement on the quick fixes for the area.
A fence and walkway are among the improvements that the Subcouncil wants to have installed at the site. The site also houses a few endangered plant species. There is also a request to have signage installed in the area.
In March, this year Moses reported that the matters pertaining to the signage and walkway will resume from the start of the new financial year. She also stated in March and again last week that there are savings from the Ward 5 allocation budget which the councillor has request to redirect to the Batavia street Conservation in the new financial year.
Phindile Maxiti, Subcouncil chair, asked about the establishment of the planned Friends of the Batavia Street Conservancy (FBSC) and wanted to know how far the process is. Moses responded that establishment of the group is well on its way, that there had been no hiccups reported to their office and that she would follow-up.
