In today’s digital age, even those tasked with upholding the law like the police, is not immune to the growing threat of online scams.
With the convenience of internet shopping, says Bellville police spokesperson Lt Col Fienie Nimb, comes the risk of falling victim to fraudulent schemes.
“As criminals become more sophisticated in exploiting digital platforms, it’s crucial for police members, and residents alike, to remain vigilant and informed. Understanding and adhering to key online safety tips can help protect us from becoming targets of internet scams, ensuring that we can continue to serve the public without the added burden of personal financial loss.”
Here, Nimb reminds the wider public, including those uniformed serving as police officers, to be weary in dealings with online merchandisers.
- Choose reputable websites: People are urged to exercise caution when purchasing goods or services online. Always buy from well-known websites with a solid reputation, and ensure they have clear processes for resolving any issues.
- Be aware of risks: Online shopping can pose risks, as criminals often exploit digital platforms to defraud unsuspecting individuals.
- Watch out for scams: Scammers may pose as legitimate sellers, either by creating fake websites that mimic genuine ones or by posting fake ads on legitimate retailer sites.
- Do your research: Before making a purchase, research the seller and compare prices. Check independent review platforms or online forums, rather than relying solely on reviews posted on the seller’s website or social media.
- Verify website security: Always ensure the website is secure before buying, and save all documentation, such as receipts or confirmation emails, as proof of your transaction.
- Be sceptical of unsolicited notifications: If you receive notifications claiming you’ve won a competition, especially one you did not enter, be cautious and avoid sharing personal information.
- Trust your instincts: If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. Exercise caution and avoid falling for seemingly unbeatable offers.
- Report suspicious activity: If you suspect any form of online crime, immediately call 086 00 10111.
