About the commemoration
16 June 1976 is recognised as a turning point in the struggle against apartheid, when students rose up against the use of Afrikaans as a language of instruction in schools. The national commemoration was held at the FNB Premium Parking precinct in Nasrec, Johannesburg, where President Cyril Ramaphosa delivered the keynote address. A wreath-laying ceremony was also held at the Hector Pieterson Memorial in Soweto.
The event was organised by the Republic of South Africa, the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA), the Milestones of Freedom foundation, the June 16 1976 Foundation, and is aligned with the National Development Plan (NDP) 2030.
