Kuils River Cricket Club defeats UCT by eight wickets to win championship

Kuils River Cricket Club won the Western Province Cricket Association first division 1B T20 championship on Sunday 29 March, beating University of Cape Town Cricket Club by eight wickets at Newlands.

The victory caps a successful season for the club, which had already secured promotion to first division 1A for the upcoming campaign.

A strong contingent of Kuils River supporters attended the final to support their team against the highly regarded UCT side.

After winning the toss, Kuils River elected to field first and delivered a disciplined bowling performance. Seamers Nathan Swartz and Elroy Ceylon, along with spinner Nathaniel Petersen, each took two wickets to restrict UCT to 104 all out in their 20 overs.

Solid performance

Swartz finished with figures of 2/4 from two overs, while Ceylon took 2/17 from four overs and Petersen claimed 2/22 from four overs. The fielding performance was solid throughout, with several good catches taken under pressure.

Chasing 105 for victory, Kuils River reached the target comfortably. Middle order batsman Fronick Kasner top-scored with 41 (not out) from 34 balls, while opening batsman Sheldon Adams contributed 28 from 33 deliveries. Kasner was awarded Man of the match for his batting performance.

Anniversary

The championship breaks Edgemead Cricket Club’s run of four consecutive titles, making Kuils River the first different winner since the 2020-’21 season.

The triumph comes during the club’s 70th anniversary year. To mark this milestone, Kuils River Cricket Club will host a 70th anniversary gala evening on 2 May. Tickets cost R200 per person and include a live band and dinner. Tickets are available at Quicket.
